The Poker Players:

Brian Rogers: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 127, Atlanta. Eagle scout, All-State wrestling team member for two years. (labeled a Beefcake by Nick). His special card deck features nude body builders. [35-42, 42-61, 76-82, 122-128, 215]

Geoff Staples: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 419, Atlanta. Life scout, recently from Burbank, California. He is the son of British father and a Cambodian mother. He is precocious, daring, and entertaining. [34-42, 42-60, 76-83, 85-89, 108-9, 117-19, 122-27, 140-48, 177-9, 199-208]

Jack Haley: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 152, Atlanta. Eagle scout, recruited by Geoff to join Brian’s private poker game. Intelligent, reliable, yet vulnerable. He meets Robin in a second game and his universe shrinks to a single goal. [37-42, 42-60, 76, 78-83, 122-27, 215-26]

Tom Dawson: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 9 and Eagle scout. He is described below.


The Lovers:

Julian Forrest: First Class scout, main protagonist. An only child, unaware that he has inherited an extraordinary artistic talent from his father, a Greenwich Village sculptor whom he has never known. Serious and single minded, determined from an early age to spend his life with Mark, a neighbor. Mark Schaefer: Scoutmaster of Troop Nine. He is a retail purchasing agent and manager. When he was a senior in college, he was asked to replace his former scoutmaster who died suddenly from a heart attack. Nick Harrison: Secondary protagonist, a Life scout. Troop Scribe, member of the Flaming Arrow patrol. A talented writer who has had a crush on Tom for three years. Tom Dawson: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 9 and Eagle scout. Outstanding leadership ability, but has long had a fetish for fresh adolescent backsides. A secondary protagonist who relies heavily on the analytic ability of his protégé, Nick Harrison. The Seekers:

Bruce Ruggles: 2nd Class scout in the Badger patrol (Sheriff Dilly) Seriously overweight. Volunteered to help in the Lifesaving final exam. [63-69, 73, 84, 91-93, 151, 231-2]

Danny Laskey: Star scout, newly appointed Senior Patrol Leader of Troop Nine, he has bypassed several able scouts because Scoutmaster Mark sees him as the best leader potential to become Assistant Scoutmaster. He has had a crush on Julian for a little more than a year. Though he lives across the fence, he and Julian have only had a nodding acquaintance prior to this camp. Robin Simmons: Life scout in the Lynx patrol. He was recruited by Tom to join in the second poker game. There he meets Jack, and his life is changed. [69-71, 78-82, 121-27, 215-26, 227, 230]

Sid Thomas: First Class scout in the Wolf patrol. Julian’s friend from school and Cub Scouts. He is known for his prankster sense of humor and his extremely skinny physique. [130-39, 150-57, 158-68, 177, 184, 231]
