The Shooting Gallery

The characters…relate to basic human development, psychology and sexuality. The dialogue is realistic and so are the gestures. Everything feels like it’s really happening. The appeal to the five senses is so powerful, too, and a theme throughout.

Fast, efficient and easy to read—that’s what sets this site apart. Readers get a quick look at all three published titles in the five book Julian’s Private Scrapbook.

With The Shooting Gallery, author Eldot continues his five-part romp at Camp Walker that began with Barr’s Meadow and The Poker Club, all published at Xlibris. Julian’s Private Scrapbook looks boldly at the issues behind one of society’s perennial controversies—bullying gay teens. This fresh new series for adults probes deep into the issue in a new way: romantic comedy. This two-week summer scout camp is an adventuresome coming of age journey.

New developments: Julian draws portraits of Leonard and Mark; Julian and Mark’s conferences continue. Julian feels empowered and undertakes a unique challenge: outfitting Nick and Tom’s clandestine bedroom. He becomes their self-appointed secret guardian.

Secondary characters enter the spotlight: Geoff selects Leonard as a special project; ignoring the staff scout boundary comes naturally. Freddy, an entrepreneur from another troop, organizes a special “shooting gallery;” it opens on Sunday. Andy and Tony add their talents—they work to offset the annoying security precautions. After hours, Robin sneaks out of camp for a rendezvous at the lake with Jack. Will they get caught?

The series is a personal chronicle set in the 1960s. The purpose is to give an adult audience a look at present day social issues from the adolescent’s perspective. Some boys are sophisticated and ahead of their years—others are new at life. The mixture is volatile, and boys have to find their way through the maze without much help from their elders.

Taboos get their power from the dark. “It’s time to let the Sun shine in,” says the author. “Turn on the light and it’s possible to find truth and beauty—and comedy. We should laugh at our human foibles when we can.”

About the Author:
Eldot, a simple cipher, is a nom de plume. Retired, he thrives on the illusion that he is still in his thirties. He’s lived in the Pacific Northwest most of his life. When he isn’t writing, he takes daily walks, gardens, and helps family and friends with sundry outdoor projects. He listens to classical music all the time. Urging and pushing by friends and relatives was the driving force to publish. But it became important to be on the active list in combating the bullying that taints our society. One reason the bullies get away with it is because society is ignorant about these boys. The author hopes to fix this by enlightening people. Julian’s Private Scrapbook series sets out to start that process.
