Diphra Enterprises gives Xlibris Publishing the nod to print and market The Poker Club, second book in the Julian’s Private Scrapbook series.

Bold and daring: Eldot looks at the issues behind one of society’s perennial controversies—the bullying of gay teens. The Poker Club probes deep into the issue in a new way: romantic comedy. This literary masterpiece follows in the footsteps of Barr’s Meadow, released in February. Author Eldot’s fresh new novel for adults follows a group of boys in an episodic two-week summer camp. Many undergo a significant transformation as they take on the adventurous coming of age journey.

The Poker Club helps answer the question: Are there no “lived happily ever after” endings in a gay boy’s coming of age story? Eldot believes there are: “Fiction allows more freedom, more honesty, and more fun. Take away the tragic ending, and guess what? The challenges faced by gay teen boys are not so different.” There are over 600 boys at this two-week camp and the reader gets to meet a few close up. First romances are poignant, scary, uplifting, and a nostalgic treat.

The Julian’s Private Scrapbook series is a personal chronicle set in the 1960s, written for mature readers. The purpose is to give an adult audience a look at present day social issues from a new perspective: the adolescent’s. Some boys are sophisticated and ahead of their years—others are new at life. The mixture is volatile, and boys have to find their way through the maze without much help from their elders.

Taboos get their power from the dark. “It’s time to let the sunshine in,” says the author. “Turn on the light and it’s possible to find truth and beauty—and comedy. We should laugh at our human foibles when we can.”

About the author:

Eldot is retired; he’s lived in the Pacific Northwest for most of his life. Aside from his grey hair and modest potbelly, he thrives on the illusion that he’s still in his thirties. When he isn’t writing he takes daily walks, gardens, and helps family and friends with sundry outdoor projects. He listens to classical music all the time.
